THE JCQ

MECHANICAL YOUNG

(Hassle Records)

Eastbourne art punks seek out new territory.

8/10

Unfairly known by many as that band who covered ‘Buck Rogers’ for Lucozade, The JCQ delivered a striking angular debut with ‘That Was Then, This Is Now’ back in 2011. For the follow up, the weirdness is still intact. It’s just there’s now a potential widespread appeal. Riffs manage to pack a punch with ‘Ghosts Diffuse’, singalong choruses are present with ‘Love’s No Good’ and synths heavily feature in the majority of the tracklisting. This is the JCQ we once knew and loved, but now with a more positive take on life. Difficult second album, you say? Not this one.
